Volume in Pipe (V.i.P.) Help Document
Purpose:
The Volume in Pipe app is designed to provide general estimates of gas volume within a given piece of piping, such as pig receivers, launchers, or vessels, especially when performing blowdowns for maintenance or safety purposes. While the app offers reasonably accurate calculations, it is not intended to replace precise engineering assessments, as it uses general assumptions rather than specific gas analyses.
How to Use:
Enter Pipe Length:
Input the length (in feet) of the component you're depressurizing, such as a pig barrel.
Enter Gas Temperature:
Input the gas temperature in the pipe before release.
Enter Starting Pressure:
Enter the starting pressure and adjust the ambient pressure if necessary.
Enter Final Pressure:
Input the final pressure after the blowdown.
Select Pipe Size:
Choose the appropriate pipe size from the selection bar.
Calculate:
Once all information is entered, click the "E" symbol in the middle of the app page to perform the calculations. The results will be presented down to the first decimal point.
Included:
Default Values:
Gas Temperature: 60°F
Starting Pressure: 1080 psi
Ambient Temperature: 60°F
Final Pressure: 0 psi
Pipe Size: 12 inches
Estimation Limitations:
This calculator is intended for estimation purposes only. It should not be used as a substitute for engineering calculations. The app’s results are based on general assumptions, such as the inability to load an exact gas analysis for your specific gas composition. Use this tool strictly for informational purposes.
